On December 3rd, 2019 Kamala Harris, democratic nominee hopeful, announced that she would be
suspending her campaign after months and months of low polling numbers and many missteps during her run for presidency. However, the Senator of California reassures her faithful supporters that even though she is out of the race she is, "still in the fight." She even tweeted to the POTUS, Donald Trump, in response to a tweet about her decision to drop out of the race, saying, "I'll see you at your trial."
Kamala Harris started off very strong. She had a solid following of people who were tired of being led by a white male Republican, and wanted to see change. They wanted to see the first black woman elected into office, and Kamala was the perfect candidate to do so: or she seemed to be. According to CNNPolitics, Harris fell from grace in the California polls, from 15% in July to 8% by October.
To give a little insight on how her opponents are actually doing now, Bernie Sanders is at 13%, Elizabeth Warren is at 18% and Joe Biden is at 27%, and as of right now, Harris is down to 4% The California Senator has dropped down to levels that no one would have expected, seeing as she created such a strong following after her first presidential debate. However, it seems as though her followers have let her fall by the wayside. Why is that?
There were many things that were revealed to the public about the Senator that made people take a step back from her. Many of the policies that she enforced while acting as Senator of California caused the step back. For example, according to Vox.com, a decade old, harsh, anti-truancy law that threatened parents with prosecution if their kids missed school for a consecutive amount of days. A 2010 video of Harris revealed her laughing while calling the idea "controversial" and bragging about threatening and scaring a mom with jail time.
Another issue came about when people noticed that, while serving as prosecutor, she incarcerated a large number of black men for petty crimes, giving them long sentences. This led to nicknames like, Kamala "Lock Em Up" Harris, and "Officer Harris". After the realization of all of these things, it was hard for Kamala to keep and maintain the black populous vote, which she subsequently lost.
Kamala Harris showed a lot of promise in the beginning. An outspoken and unafraid candidate who was willing to do any and everything for the people is exactly what we need right now, and she is just that. Not to mention she could have made history as being the first black woman, and even just woman, to hold the presidency. However, when you do things in the past, they come back to get you eventually. Let me know what you think of Kamala Harris in the comment section below!
Kamala Harris did a LOT of pandering to get the youth and black vote. it was pretty much obvious she didn’t care about us until she ran for president. now, i will say it sucks that she had to drop because two people with money suddenly ran for president out of nowhere; they didn’t put forth the hard work Kamala did, they just put forth their wallets.
